NB: Prices above for SQL Server 2008 R2 were from the Microsoft store. SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition without SA – US$29,339 x 4 = $117,356.SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition without SA – US$7,525 x 4 = $30,100.SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition without SA - US$6,874 x 48 = $329,952.SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition without SA - US$1,793 x 48 = $86,064.But let’s say you just require 1 instance, a lot of connections (so SQL Server + CALs is not an option) and Enterprise features are not required, this I suspect the reasoning is that you could install multiple instances and then use the remaining cores. It is an interesting question & I suspect one that will be asked often.įrom what I understand and I could be wrong, if you want to use core licencing then you'd have to licence all cores, even though each instance could use a maximum 16 logical cores.
